The {\it Raising Calculus to the Surface} materials and activities are designed to engage students in conversations with their classmates about mathematical ideas. These activities are different from traditional mathematics activities which ask students to solve problems on recently covered material. Instead, the activities are designed to let students {\it discover} new mathematics, suggest new conjectures, and direct the course towards upcoming mathematical topics. In this chapter, we outline the features of the activities which foster discussion and provide suggestions on how to successfully implement the materials in the classroom.
%The {\it Raising Calculus to the Surface} materials are designed to engage students in conversations with their fellow classmates about mathematical ideas. The activities themselves are designed as {\it exploratory} activities in which the students and the class uncover relationships between mathematical concepts which can be further explored and {\it mathematized } in the following class period. The activity handout itself is a small part of this classroom experience. In this chapter, we provide insight into the design of the activity handout and offer suggestions for fostering useful inter-group discussion and intra-group discussion as well as a whole-class wrap-up which helps lead into the subsequent content of the course.
